FAMILY LAW

When things change,
get the legal side right

Whether you're separating, preparing for marriage, or ready to finalize a divorce, I'll help you put a clear, fair agreement in place. I handle the paperwork and the details so you can focus on what comes next.

WHAT I HELP WITH

Separation agreements, marriage contracts (prenuptial and cohabitation agreements), and uncontested divorces. Situations where both parties are ready to work toward a resolution.

HOW IT WORKS

We start with a free consultation to talk through your situation. I'll explain your options and what's involved, and if you'd like to proceed, I'll quote a flat fee for the work.

WHAT IT COSTS

Flat fees for all family law services, quoted after our initial consultation. You'll know the full cost before any work begins. No hourly billing, no surprises.

Separation Agreements

A separation agreement is a legally binding contract between you and your partner that sets out how you'll divide property, handle support, and (if applicable) arrange parenting time and decision-making for your children.

Having a proper separation agreement in place protects both of you. It provides certainty, avoids future disputes, and can be enforced if either party doesn't follow through. If you eventually proceed to a divorce, having an agreement already in place makes that process significantly simpler.

I'll work with you to understand your situation, draft an agreement that reflects what you and your partner have agreed to, and make sure it meets the legal requirements to be enforceable in Ontario.

  • Division of property and assets

  • Spousal support terms

  • Parenting arrangements and decision-making responsibility

  • Child support (in accordance with the Child Support Guidelines)

  • Handling of the matrimonial home

  • Debt allocation

  • Any other terms you and your partner have agreed on

Marriage Contracts

A marriage contract (sometimes called a prenuptial agreement) is a written agreement between you and your partner that sets out how certain matters will be handled if the relationship ends. Cohabitation agreements serve the same purpose for common-law partners.

These aren't about expecting the worst. They're about having an honest conversation now, while things are good, about how you'll handle things if circumstances change. That conversation is much easier to have before a separation than during one.

I'll help you think through what should be covered, draft the agreement, and make sure it's done properly so it holds up.

  • Protection of pre-marital assets and property

  • Business ownership and interests

  • Inheritance and family gifts

  • Spousal support expectations

  • Property division on separation

  • Cohabitation agreements for common-law partners

Uncontested Divorces

If you and your spouse have already agreed on the terms of your separation and simply need to make the divorce official, I can handle the court application for you. This is a straightforward process, but it still needs to be done correctly.

I'll prepare and file all the necessary court documents, make sure the paperwork is complete and accurate, and guide you through the process from start to finish. In most cases, you won't need to attend court.

  • Preparation and filing of the divorce application

  • All required court documents and supporting materials

  • Service on your spouse (if a joint application is not possible)

  • Follow-up with the court through to the Divorce Order

  • Obtaining your Certificate of Divorce

Common questions I help answer:

  • Do I need a separation agreement before I can get a divorce?

  • How is property divided when a common-law relationship ends?

  • Can I protect my business with a marriage contract?

  • What happens to the house?

  • How does child support work, and can we agree on the amount ourselves?

  • How long does an uncontested divorce take?

  • Is a separation agreement enforceable if we didn't use lawyers?
